This pencil drawing of a boat from the Aru Islands in the Southeastern Moluccas was made around 1824 by Adrianus Johannes Bik. The sketch depicts an Indonesian vessel adorned with banners and streamers, a common sight in Southeast Asia. The image must be understood within the context of Dutch colonial expansion. During this period, Dutch artists were often employed to document the landscapes, people, and customs of the regions they colonized. These images served to further Dutch understanding and control over these territories and were collected and stored in institutions such as the Rijksmuseum. This drawing is valuable because it offers a glimpse into the maritime technology and cultural practices of the Aru people in the early 19th century. Historical documents, such as travelogues, ethnographic studies, and colonial archives can help us interpret this work. By examining such sources, we can understand the complex relationship between art, colonialism, and cultural representation.
