Curatorial notes

Marcantonio Bassetti created this pen and brown ink drawing, "Christ Entering Jerusalem," sometime between 1586 and 1630. Bassetti was working in Verona at a time when the city was under Venetian rule, a cultural and economic exchange that influenced his artistic style. The triumphal entry into Jerusalem is depicted with Christ riding on a donkey, a symbol of humility, while crowds line the streets, some kneeling in reverence. This scene reflects the power dynamics of the time, questioning authority through a lens of spiritual leadership. Bassetti’s choice to focus on this moment suggests a commentary on the sociopolitical landscape of his era. The drawing's intimate scale invites viewers to contemplate the emotional nuances of faith, leadership, and the complexities of identity within a society undergoing significant transformation. The scene may be familiar, but Bassetti asks us to consider the humanity within religious narratives.
