This maiolica dish with the Story of Semiramis was created by Fra Xanto Avelli da Rovigo, and is currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The composition presents a tableau of figures within a shallow, theatrical space, evoking a sense of Renaissance pageantry. The artist masterfully employs color to direct the viewer's gaze. Note how the ochre of the clothing contrasts with the surrounding environment. This carefully orchestrated arrangement invites us to consider the underlying power structures and symbolic meanings at play. The dish destabilizes the traditional notions of power and challenges fixed interpretations through the narrative of Semiramis who assumes power by disguising herself as a male king. Consider how Avelli's choice of colors, spatial organization and the juxtaposition of different elements challenge conventional representation. The dish functions as a visual and intellectual puzzle, inviting ongoing interpretation and contemplation.
