This anonymous still bank in the shape of a globe probably wasn't intended as a profound philosophical statement, but I find myself drawn in by its color palette and the traces of its making. The metallic hues, verdigris greens, and coppery browns, aren't laid on with a brush, but cast, giving the continents a bumpy, almost topographic texture. It's this tension between the object as a mass-produced item and the tactile quality of its surface that I find so compelling. Think of how many hands have touched it, each leaving their own trace. I'm reminded of Vija Celmins, who also has this way of rendering the world through touch, transforming it into something both familiar and strangely new. Both artists embrace a process of layering and building up the surface, so we can reflect on art as an accumulation of gestures, a record of seeing and feeling. This old globe bank isn't just a map, it's an invitation to imagine all the stories and experiences it might hold.
