This miniature silver ice sled was made by Willem van Strant, likely sometime between 1700 and 1742. This object is a brilliant example of the silversmith’s art. Working the metal with hammers, punches, and files, van Strant coaxed it into precise forms, creating a charming replica. The silver surface is reflective and smooth. The sleigh itself has a unique, almost pagoda-like form, an exotic touch, while the horse is animated, caught mid-stride. This isn’t just a representation of a winter scene, but a display of wealth, craftsmanship, and the leisure time to enjoy winter sports. Consider the vast amount of labour involved in the production of the silver itself, and the specialized skills required to transform it into this precious object. This sled speaks to the intersection of art, craft, and social status.
