Pablo Picasso made this painting of a pitcher and a glass, with oil on canvas, and it’s all about the push and pull of colors and shapes. Look how Picasso uses thick, bold lines to define the objects, but then fills them in with unexpected colors. The green blob that makes up the body of the pitcher feels almost cartoonish, and the bright yellow background clashes playfully with the darker tones. It’s like he's daring you to make sense of it all. I find myself drawn to the little symbol or figure on the right. It's a quirky, almost hieroglyphic shape, painted in black, with a jaunty little curve on top. It’s as if Picasso is having a private joke, hinting at something just beyond our grasp. It reminds me a little of Miró, who also had a great sense of humour and a love of the absurd. Ultimately, this painting is a reminder that art doesn't always have to make sense. Sometimes, it's enough to revel in the sheer joy of color, texture, and the playful dance of forms.
