Interior I
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
William Brice made Interior I, a lithograph, and immediately I'm thinking about the graphic quality, the way the marks pull across the surface, almost like knitting. I love that drawing is so upfront here. The linear quality of the lithographic crayon gives this image a real dynamism; there is a lot to look at! See how the artist renders that messy bedhead with such freedom? It really pulls you in! The way the lines converge and diverge feels really intimate and a little claustrophobic, like you're right there in the middle of it all. Brice's interior makes me think of other artists who were working during this time like, for example, R. B. Kitaj, whose work is also concerned with interiority, mark making, and this tension between representation and abstraction.
