Curatorial notes

This print, made by Johannes Egbertus van Lieshout, presents us with the archetypal imagery of military life in the Netherlands. Note the commanding figures, fortresses, and soldiers in various scenes of battle and preparation. Observe how the image of the fortress, a symbol of security and resistance, appears throughout history, from ancient city walls to modern military installations. This motif echoes in illuminated manuscripts and Renaissance paintings, each time modified by cultural and technological contexts, yet always retaining its core message of defense. Psychologically, the fortress speaks to our innate need for protection, a manifestation of collective fears and the desire for safety. This yearning is not merely a rational response but a deep-seated emotional drive. The image of the soldier, so prominent here, mirrors similar figures across time, linking us to a long tradition of heroism and sacrifice, stirring deep emotions tied to memory. The print reminds us of the cyclical nature of history, where symbols recur, transformed, and imbued with new meaning, reflecting the shifting cultural landscape.
