This is "Auschwitz savior II," by Mathias Goeritz, it's not dated, and looks to be made of a cast material, perhaps bronze. Goeritz isn’t smoothing things over here, he's leaving traces, letting the material speak. Up close, you can almost feel the rough texture, the little imperfections that tell a story of process. It’s this quality that gets me, like the artist is working through something, not trying to hide it. The figure has its arms out in this gesture, is it supplication, is it defiance? This part, for me, is pure Goeritz; it’s a process. It reminds me a bit of Giacometti, but with more, I don't know, heart? Both artists wrestle with the figure, but Goeritz feels more raw, less refined. Ultimately, the meaning of this piece isn't fixed, it’s open, like a question hanging in the air.
