Curator: Let’s turn our attention to this Wedding Belt from approximately the 19th century, housed right here at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Its anonymous creation in fibre-art using silk, cotton, and weaving is just the beginning of the story. Editor: Oh, this feels so lavish and… intentional. The cascades of thread tipped with tiny metallic beads lend such dignity to what’s essentially just an ornate sash. It looks less like it’s holding something up and more like it's broadcasting something—celebration maybe? Curator: Indeed! Its geometric patterns, woven meticulously into the textile, present a beautiful demonstration of Orientalism aesthetics. It’s all about that decorative art style you were picking up on—every thread seems to carry meaning. Editor: And I keep coming back to the color transitions. That cool blue shifts into this burnt sienna like the passage of hours, the dawn perhaps. I almost missed the playful little patterned strip towards the one end, too.
