Dmytro Kavsan made this painting, "Alternative Solution," with what looks like oil paint. It is worked, reworked, layered up with browns and greens, that almost look like landscape. I can imagine Kavsan moving the paint around, a little unsure, a little tentative, trying to find the image, pushing the paint here and there. There's a figure, or what looks like a figure, and it's like he is looking for something, an answer in the paint. As if it is the painting that will help him solve his problem. The gesture in the lower part, near the white area, has the feeling of other painters like Guston, who used heavy handed dark outlines. I see how Kavsan is looking for a way through, like other painters, across time, in a dialogue to find his own alternative solution, through paint.
