Drie ontwerpen voor ornamenten c. 1725 - 1750

These are three ornament designs by Gabriel Huquier dating back to the 18th century. Huquier was working in an era where art served to project power and status, particularly of the monarchy and aristocracy. Let’s consider the imagery: emblems of authority, symbols of wealth, and classical figures. The bottom design includes a ram’s head, which could symbolize virility and power, and is decorated with foliage, which may represent abundance. The middle one presents a couple underneath what could be cupid, framed by candle stands. The top one has the trappings of high religious office. In this context, such designs were integral to constructing and reinforcing social hierarchies.
