Curatorial notes
This page of Niels Larsen Stevns' notebook, written in ink, is a transcription about Børglum Kloster. Look at how the density of the marks creates a varied surface, a landscape of text. The blue-black ink is applied with an even pressure, each letter carefully formed, yet the overall effect is lively and rhythmic. See how the lines of text curve and flow across the page, creating a sense of movement and energy. It’s as though Stevns is not just recording information, but also imbuing it with his own sense of curiosity and wonder. Notice how some words are darker and more emphatic than others, indicating a shift in tone or emphasis. It reminds me of Cy Twombly’s scrawled paintings, where writing becomes a form of drawing. Both artists share a love of gesture and a willingness to embrace imperfection. Stevns uses the act of transcription as a way of engaging with the world, finding beauty and meaning in the everyday. His art embraces ambiguity.
