Rupert Bunny made this drawing of a female nude with ink on paper. The marks are so light, the line so sensitive, that it feels like the drawing happened in one breath. You can sense Bunny figuring out the pose right there on the page. Look at how the body seems to almost dissolve into the background. The line goes in and out of focus, describing the figure as much through what it omits as what it includes. See how the line describing the model's back gently fades away before returning, it’s like Bunny is feeling his way across the surface. It reminds me of Matisse, the way he could capture so much with so little. But there’s something about Bunny’s touch that’s all his own. It's a reminder that art isn't about answers, but about asking questions, and sometimes, just breathing.
