This chromolithograph produced by Goodwin & Company formed part of a series of collectible cards included in Old Judge and Gypsy Queen Cigarettes. The card depicts the oarsman, Beach, in the foreground, and another in the distance. These cards emerged during a time of significant transformation in American culture, marked by industrialization, urbanization, and changing attitudes towards leisure and sports. Rowing was becoming increasingly popular among the upper and middle classes and the depiction of strong male athletes helped to promote ideals of masculinity and physical prowess. The series reflects societal values and the commercial interests of the time, as well as the ways in which advertising could both reflect and shape cultural norms. Cards such as these provided a shared cultural touchstone, fostering a sense of community among consumers. The idealized portrayal of athletes also offered a form of escapism amidst the rapid changes of the era.
