Blank 1864 - 1941

Curator: We're looking at Niels Larsen Stevns' piece entitled "Blank" believed to have been created sometime between 1864 and 1941. It's held here at the SMK, Statens Museum for Kunst. Editor: An apt title. My first impression? It's…immaculate, almost serene. The aged paper creates a sense of quietude. Is this just a spread from an old ledger? Curator: It appears to be rendered using colored pencil on paper, yet the so-called "Blank" state compels us to reflect on how institutional frameworks shape our perception. The artwork resides inside of a museum; without this context, does it become mere stationary? Editor: From a formal standpoint, the creamy white of the aged paper is far from neutral.
