Curatorial notes
This is a portrait of Louis XVI, King of France, by Antoine François Callet. The miniature, only a little larger than a silver dollar, immediately draws us into its intimate scale and precise composition. Set against a dark background, the king's figure is meticulously rendered with smooth brushstrokes, a testament to the artist’s formal mastery. The circular format, framed in gold, creates a sense of containment and focused attention. The use of color and detail is strategic. The red of the King's jacket, contrasted with the blue sash, create a focal point, drawing the eye to his face. The rendering of textures, from the soft wig to the velvet jacket, adds a layer of tactile realism. The very small scale invites a sense of scrutiny and demands closer inspection, thus creating a certain amount of tension as we examine the King’s likeness.
