"Ecloga V" is an etching by Christian Rothgiesser, made in the 17th century. Rothgiesser lived during a time of religious and political upheaval in Europe, particularly during the Thirty Years' War. This landscape presents us with a vision of pastoral life, yet, if you look closer, you might recognize elements that disrupt this idyllic scene. Smoke rises in the background, perhaps alluding to the conflict that pervaded daily life. The figures, while appearing to enjoy nature, are also sharply dressed, marking a separation from the working class. Rothgiesser’s landscapes can be seen as negotiating the relationship between the elite and the land. The scenes reflect both an appreciation for the natural world, and perhaps a desire to escape the turmoil of the era. The emotional weight of these times are embedded in the lines of the etching, inviting us to reflect on the complexities of history.
