Editor: This is Charles François Daubigny’s, The Ferry Boat, and it looks like a print. The composition, with the symmetry of the trees, is so striking! What do you see in this piece? Curator: The linear precision achieved through the etching technique defines the tonal range. Observe how Daubigny uses contrasting textures to differentiate the water from the foliage and sky. Editor: So the texture helps define the image? Curator: Indeed. Note also the structural balance created by the verticality of the trees against the horizontal emphasis of the water and boat. It is a very organized composition. Editor: I see what you mean. I will definitely look closer at textures from now on.
