Here we see an undated drawing of a cartouche for a coat of arms, made by an anonymous artist. Cartouches like these were important visual markers of status in many European countries, especially in the Netherlands. The image creates meaning through recognizable visual codes. For example, the helmet at the top and the surrounding foliage are classic symbols of nobility and authority. It shows us how the elite classes wanted to be seen. The blank shields are waiting to be filled with imagery to demonstrate the lineage of a family, their achievements, and their rights. Art historians can use resources such as genealogical records, books of heraldry, and period correspondence to uncover the stories behind specific examples and how the use of imagery evolved over time according to social needs. This artwork's meaning is contingent on its social and institutional context.
