Harry Callahan made this photograph, "Leaf on Snow," using gelatin silver print. I can imagine him outside in the cold with his camera, hunting for the unexpected. The picture plane is filled with a dusting of snow, a sort of all-over pattern. And then, right there, a tiny leaf—a detail so easily missed. I think about how Callahan trained his eye, patiently observing the world. He notices what others overlook. It's a minimalist gesture, finding beauty in the ordinary. Callahan also did a lot of street photography in cities; maybe he was thinking about the contrast between the natural and the urban, between the ephemeral and the permanent. It strikes me as a kind of haiku in photographic form, a quiet moment of reflection. It reminds us that art isn’t always about grand statements; sometimes, it’s about seeing the small things with fresh eyes.
