Curatorial notes

David Ketel captured this image, titled 'De Dag van de Vloot,' using an unknown medium. At first glance, it looks like any other image of military personnel. But consider the era in which Ketel lived and worked. As a Dutch artist whose career spanned much of the twentieth century, his work would have been deeply informed by the legacy of colonialism. Ketel lived through two World Wars, and the decolonization movements that swept the globe in the mid-20th century. It prompts us to reflect on the historical context of military presence, especially in the wake of colonialism and global conflicts. Who are these soldiers, and what is the nature of their presence? It invites us to reflect on the identities and experiences of those both within and outside of these military structures, encouraging a dialogue about power, representation, and historical narratives.
