Curatorial notes

This is Luca Ciamberlano’s rendering of ‘Filippo Neri geneest paus Clemens VIII van de jicht’, an engraving housed at the Rijksmuseum. Notice the composition, where symmetry and linear perspective dominate. The bed’s structure, with its receding lines, draws our eye to the central interaction between Filippo and the Pope, while the detailed, repetitive patterns on the bed frame create a rhythmic visual texture. Ciamberlano uses hatching and cross-hatching to define forms and create tonal variations within the monochromatic palette. The contrast between light and shadow is used to highlight Filippo, distinguished by a halo, as the main subject, thus subtly reinforcing his spiritual power. The composition invites us to consider not just the event, but also the structured, almost theatrical space in which it unfolds. This staged setting prompts questions about power, representation, and the mediation of divine acts through artistic form.
