Curatorial notes

This is Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig's preliminary design for an exhibition poster in Domburg, created at the turn of the 20th century. Nibbrig, part of the Dutch post-impressionist movement, captured the ethereal atmosphere of the coastal town. At first glance, the design shows figures dancing. But, if we look closer, we see a deeper connection to the cultural and social fabric of the time. The figures, likely women, are depicted in what appears to be traditional garb, evoking a sense of community and belonging. Domburg was a popular destination for artists and intellectuals at the time. Nibbrig's poster design reflects the town's allure as a place where one could explore modern ideas while also holding onto the traditions of the past. It's a visual representation of a society in flux, grappling with questions of identity, gender, and the changing landscape of art and culture.
