Editor: This is an untitled photograph by Martin Schweig, depicting a young girl seated in a living room. The inverted tones give it a ghostly feel. What do you see in terms of its formal qualities? Curator: Observe the stark contrast between the figure and the ornate backdrop. The rigid pose of the girl, juxtaposed with the soft curves of the chair, creates a visual tension. Note also the planar composition, dividing the space into distinct layers. Editor: So, it’s more about the arrangement of shapes and forms than the subject matter itself? Curator: Precisely. The negative space around the figure, and how it interacts with the geometric patterns in the room, contributes significantly to the image's overall impact. Schweig is less interested in narrative and more in the interplay of light and shadow, form and texture. Editor: That’s a perspective I hadn’t considered. Focusing on the formal elements really changes how I see it.
