This anonymous collage from the 'De Verborgen Camera' photo book is like a little poem made of absence. The dark ground punctuated by these scattered beige shapes; it's a bit like looking at constellations in the night sky, isn't it? Or maybe a map of something lost. There's a real physicality to the piece, I can almost feel the texture of the paper and the slightly rough edges of the collage elements. The beige fragments feel almost like ghostly remnants, traces of images that once were, but now only exist as faint impressions. Look at that line of beige running down the right, it splutters like it was applied very quickly, maybe in one go. It reminds me of the work of Robert Rauschenberg, who also played with collage and the idea of found imagery, and how all art is a form of conversation, remixing, responding, and questioning the world around us. It invites us to consider what has been concealed, what remains, and how even the smallest fragment can hold a story.
