This bronze medal was created by Louis Brenet to honor Lord Exmouth and the Bombardment of Algiers. Immediately, the circular form strikes us, its edges defining two distinct yet connected narratives. On one side, the relief of Lord Exmouth is captured in profile. The meticulous detailing of his uniform contrasts sharply with the inscription encircling him. Flipping the medal, a mythological scene unfolds; Poseidon, mounted on a sea monster, dominates the composition. The layering of the figures creates depth, yet the monochromatic bronze flattens the perspective, challenging traditional notions of sculptural space. The medal's structure invites us to consider power, heroism, and the construction of historical memory. The visual language employed, rich with classical allusion, is deliberately designed to elevate and legitimize the actions of Lord Exmouth.
