"The Dream of Joachim" was painted by Giotto in the early 14th century as a fresco for the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. Giotto, who lived in a deeply religious society, presents a pivotal moment in the story of Mary's parents, Joachim and Anna. The fresco portrays Joachim, a man shamed by his infertility, receiving divine assurance in a dream, after he has retreated to the margins of his community to live amongst shepherds. Giotto’s naturalistic style humanizes Joachim’s emotional experience. His downcast posture embodies his sense of isolation, while the angel brings a message of hope and inclusion. The figures of the shepherds, traditionally on the periphery of society, and the intimate portrayal of Joachim challenge the rigid social norms around piety and worthiness. The emotional depth of the scene invites us to reflect on our own experiences of exclusion and the universal human desire for acceptance.
