Rosalia Lane made this watercolor of a bonnet, and right away I'm struck by how the process feels so present. You get the sense that she's working things out as she goes. The color is understated, almost ghostly, built up in washes of grays and creams. You can see the way the paper absorbs the pigment, creating these soft edges. The lace trim, for example, is just a suggestion, a few wisps of lines and dots. It's like she's capturing the essence of the bonnet, not trying to make a perfect copy. It’s more about feeling than describing. There’s something really beautiful about the way she leaves things unresolved. It’s this kind of openness that makes art so alive. Think of Morandi’s still lives, how he keeps going back to the same motifs. Art is about conversation, a constant revisiting and reimagining.
