This is Theo Mesker’s etching of Willem Maris, residing in the Rijksmuseum. In it we see the profile of Maris, his gaze directed towards a future unknown to us but not to him. This posture, looking off to the side, is a recurring motif throughout art history. Think of ancient Roman portraiture where leaders were often depicted in profile, symbolizing authority, and foresight. Consider, too, how Renaissance artists used similar profiles to denote both nobility and intellectual prowess. The averted gaze, then and now, speaks to a deep-seated human desire to transcend the present, hinting at a world of possibilities. It's a powerful symbol, engaging our subconscious.
