Herman Saftleven created "Swineherd with four pigs" using etching, a printmaking technique that democratized image production in the 17th century. The etcher covers a metal plate with a waxy, acid-resistant ground, then draws through it with a needle, exposing the metal. Immersing the plate in acid bites away the lines, leaving an image that can be inked and printed. Saftleven’s skill is evident in the subtle gradations of tone and texture he achieves, from the luminous sky to the rough earth. This print, and others like it, offer us a glimpse into the daily lives of working people. The swineherd, a humble figure, occupies a landscape rendered with remarkable detail, a testament to the engraver's skill, but also to the changing relationship between labor and land. Ultimately, Saftleven’s focus on everyday subjects through the relatively accessible medium of print challenges traditional hierarchies within art. It asks us to consider the value and dignity of labor, and the beauty that can be found in the ordinary.
