Curatorial notes

Simon Moulijn created this print of Muiderslot castle using etching. The monochrome palette and intricate line work give the image a dreamy, ethereal quality, almost as though it's a memory fading into the past. Look at how the composition is structured around the strong verticality of the tree on the right, contrasting with the horizontal spread of the castle and its reflection in the water. This contrast creates a visual tension, a dialogue between nature and architecture. The artist employs a semiotic system of signs, using the castle to signify stability and history, while the tree represents organic growth and the passage of time. The clouds add a dynamic layer to the scene, their soft forms playing against the rigid geometry of the castle. Moulijn challenges the viewer to see beyond the literal representation, inviting us to contemplate the interplay of time, nature, and human construction.
