Editor: This is a drawing called "Studier af forskellige fuglearter," or "Studies of different bird species," by Niels Larsen Stevns, who worked between 1864 and 1941. It's a pencil drawing on paper. I'm really drawn to how simple the marks are; they seem almost fleeting. What strikes you about this sketch? Curator: Indeed. The artist's hand is very much on display here. The rapid, almost scribbled lines create the impression of birds caught in motion. Note how the artist hasn't attempted to render realistic detail, instead focusing on capturing the essence of avian form through line and spatial relationship on the page. The overall composition is built upon a series of intersections. Editor: I see what you mean about the intersections. The lines overlap so much that it almost becomes abstract. Does the lack of detail make it more or less successful as a study of birds, do you think? Curator: I believe it augments its value as a study, as the focus is shifted away from mimetic representation to one concerning observation. Notice the quality of the lines - are they uniform? Are their relative darkness equal in the image? Editor: No, some lines are darker, almost pressed harder into the page, especially defining what I think might be the heads of the birds. It brings some areas forward, adding a sense of depth even though it’s so minimal. Curator: Precisely. The contrast provided by darker linework does provide depth within the shallow picture space. It also leads us to inquire after the subjective qualities of line itself - its width, its tonality. Do you note any differences between areas of the image created by different uses of line? Editor: That’s interesting! I hadn't thought of it that way, considering just the marks themselves. Curator: Analyzing the interplay of line, form, and space reveals much about the artist's process. It allows us a deeper appreciation for their engagement with the visual world, beyond simply identifying the subject matter.
