Alphonse Mucha created the lithograph, “Gismonda” to advertise Victorien Sardou's play starring Sarah Bernhardt. Mucha’s poster propelled him to become one of the most well-known artists of the Art Nouveau movement. Bernhardt, as Gismonda, is depicted as a divine, almost ethereal figure through the halo behind her head. She is self-assured and regal in her stance. During this period, Bernhardt was an iconic figure, challenging traditional gender roles with her independence, ambition, and control over her public image. The style, inspired by Japanese prints and the Arts and Crafts movement, rejected industrialization and embraced handcrafted techniques. Mucha's work, however, blurred the lines between art and commerce, raising questions about accessibility, commercialization, and the role of art in society. "Gismonda" symbolizes an era where art became intertwined with identity. It mirrored the desires, struggles, and shifting cultural values of the time.
