Curator: This is a page from "Van de Sinne-poppen," an emblem book created by Roemer Visscher, published in 1614. This particular page, entitled "XXII In dese hoeck," features both text and an engraving. Editor: My first impression is that the engraving feels meticulously crafted, capturing a bustling harbour scene with considerable detail despite its small scale. It seems to be trying to communicate a sense of prosperity. Curator: Indeed. The text provides the moral context for the image, it seems. Visscher, through this emblem, seems to comment on where it's truly ‘good’ to reside. Look at how he juxtaposes the apparent wealth of lands connected to harbours against the actual quality of life of laborers, drawing parallels to animals bearing burdens. The act of representing labourers this way might invite deeper interrogation on the working conditions and social hierarchy of the Golden Age. Editor: I notice the ships dominating the visual space, their masts and rigging creating a complex web of lines. There's an interesting interplay between the light and shadow which lends depth to the otherwise very linear, graphic nature of the engraving. This also pulls focus towards them as the centres of the entire process illustrated in the print. Curator: It also strikes me how the inclusion of this print in a book invites considering print culture's broader societal functions and appeal as a material artifact for learning morals or just entertainment. Editor: Absolutely. It’s fascinating how Visscher has combined word and image in “XXII In dese hoeck," inviting contemplation on commerce and human condition. It gives another dimension to simply examining each alone. Curator: For sure. I’m walking away considering how material comforts impact human lives, both from the perspective of those moving and creating goods but also for the wealthy consuming them.
