Editor: Here we have "Away We Go," a mixed-media piece by Jason Limon created in 2019. At first glance, it's...unsettling, even a little grim, but also strangely beautiful. The artist layers all of these everyday objects in an odd sort of grid structure, complete with words scattered throughout. How do you interpret this work? Curator: It hums, doesn't it? With a quiet, internal electricity. For me, Jason Limon crafts a space of vulnerability, a whispered conversation with the self. Each element — those distressed blocks, the faded lettering like fragmented memories, and even the medication references — speaks of impermanence. I see echoes of vanitas paintings. Everything lovely decaying, everything fragile exposed. Don't you find a morbid humor bubbling beneath the surface? Editor: Yes! The two bottle caps... "Self-Induced" next to "Delirium" certainly points to that darkness. But there's an organized quality too. Are these relics from a fading present, a generation on meds? Curator: Precisely. I get the impression of controlled chaos, the attempt to structure, perhaps contain, experiences and feelings, with pop-surrealist humor giving us a clue about the absurdity of modern living and consumerism.. The artist asks how long this delicious feeling of “being alive” will last. And there's something undeniably poetic in arranging the ephemera of daily life into a visual poem. Like a modern day "memento mori," don’t you agree? Editor: Definitely. I'm seeing it in a completely different way now, the impasto adds so much texture to everything! Thank you! Curator: My pleasure! Art is truly about feeling and personal narratives that resonate with an audience!
