Curatorial notes

This photograph made by A. Delamare & A. Raguet, shows a girl sitting on a chair. Note how her posture mirrors the ages-old trope of melancholia. Observe the slightly slumped shoulders, the averted gaze – these gestures echo through centuries of art. In classical antiquity, such postures were associated with deep contemplation, even sorrow, embodying a soul weighed down by thought. We see echoes of this in Renaissance depictions of saints, and even in modern portraiture. The seated figure itself, seemingly passive, becomes a vessel of inner turmoil, a visual representation of deep, often unspoken emotions. The subconscious power here lies in its ability to resonate with our own feelings of introspection and reflection. It’s a timeless pose, constantly reborn across epochs, reminding us of the shared human experience of quiet contemplation.
