Jules Guiette created this print, "Twee boten in een vaart," using etching and aquatint. These are processes that allow for incredible tonal range. The plate is submerged in acid, creating recessed lines and textures that hold the ink. Look closely, and you'll notice the velvety blacks, achieved through careful control of the etching process. Aquatint, in particular, allowed Guiette to build up layers of tone. These textures give a sense of depth and atmosphere to the tranquil waterway scene. The choice of printmaking suggests Guiette’s interest in a wider distribution of his art, making it more accessible than a unique painting or drawing. It also speaks to the democratizing forces of industrialization. Printmaking is inherently reproducible. It reflects the changing social landscape of the late 19th century. So, next time you look at a print, think not only about the image, but also the means of its making, and its place in a rapidly changing world.
