Here, Charles Henning rendered a Pa. German Saffron Box, and, like a good painting, this feels like it was made with love. The careful mark-making and muted, earthy palette suggest a process of mindful observation and affection. The artist has handled this medium, whatever it may be, with a certain knowingness that suggests he understands the value of the object he is painting. I’m drawn to the way the artist has rendered the little strawberries or floral patterns. They’re not quite symmetrical, and each one has its own personality. It's like each little leaf and berry has been given its own little story to tell. The texture is smooth, with delicate lines and washes creating a sense of depth and form. It reminds me a little of the work of Henri Rousseau - that same naive but deeply felt approach to the subject matter. Ultimately, art is about seeing the world in new ways, and Henning invites us to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship in everyday objects, reminding us that art can be found in the most unexpected places.
