Curatorial notes
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo rendered this drawing of a flock of sheep, a bullock, and a dog with pen and brown ink, and gray wash. Here, the sheep, gathered at the pool, are symbols of innocence and collective unity. The image of sheep drinking evokes the pastoral tradition, yet their concentrated act of drinking can be linked to religious iconography of baptism and spiritual cleansing. Think of the Lamb of God— a symbol of purity and sacrifice found in Christian art. The dog standing guard, contrasts with the vulnerability of the flock, reminding us of the complex role animals have played in our collective psyche. In observing Tiepolo's sheep, we trace their lineage across time, noting how they've evolved from ancient symbols of sacrifice to modern emblems of gentleness. It reminds us that symbols are not static but fluid entities that undergo constant transformation.
