Ernst Witkamp painted this watercolor, “Zandweg door bosrijk landschap”, depicting a sandy path through a wooded landscape. Witkamp’s choice of subject reflects the late 19th-century art movement focused on landscape, and the relationship between nature and the human figure. But the painting isn't merely a picturesque scene, it evokes something deeper. Look at the lone figure walking away on the path; they seem to be in a dialogue with their surroundings. Are they a part of the landscape, or separate from it? How might their gender and class affect their relationship to the environment? Witkamp doesn't tell us, but the figure invites us to reflect on our own place in the world, on who has access to nature, and on the stories that landscapes can hold. In this way, Witkamp’s quiet scene becomes a space for contemplation.
