This anonymous plate at the Minneapolis Institute of Art presents a decorative scheme that marries careful symmetry with organic forms. The artist has used a white ground to offset a vibrant palette of blues, greens, and reds, creating a visually striking surface. The central motif, a stylized tree form, anchors the composition, around which floral elements unfurl in a rhythmic pattern. The plate's structure, with its radial balance, may be interpreted through a formalist lens as an exercise in controlled expression. The interplay between the rigid symmetry and the free-flowing floral designs suggests a negotiation between order and chaos, a theme echoed across various cultural artifacts of its time. This push and pull can be seen as a semiotic device, where the symmetrical layout signifies control, while the organic motifs represent nature’s untamed essence. Notice how the artist's use of line and color doesn’t just decorate but also communicates deeper cultural values, challenging the viewer to see beyond the surface ornamentation and consider the underlying symbolic language.

This brilliant plate exemplifies the Ottomans' successful attempt at polychromy, in which a clear white body (tin-glazed earthenware) forms the ground for bright blue, green, and red underglaze motifs. The foliate rim is decorated in a stylized wave pattern ultimately based on a Chinese prototype. Because Ottoman sultans amassed large collections of Chinese ceramics, imported wares naturally influenced local production. The potters of Iznik, however, soon created an original decorative vocabulary. The tulips, pinks, irises, and cypress comprising the center of this dish, for instance, are not found in this combination on Chinese wares.
