Curatorial notes

Reinier Vinkeles created this print, now at the Rijksmuseum, showing a woman weeping over a man who has lost consciousness. The architectural arches and the weeping woman are motifs rich with historical echoes. Consider the pose of the sorrowful woman, reminiscent of the Virgin Mary cradling the body of Christ. This Pietà-like image taps into a deep well of collective memory, evoking themes of mourning, compassion, and sacrifice. We find it echoed across centuries, from ancient sculptures to Renaissance paintings, each iteration layering new cultural and emotional resonance onto the original form. The weeping figure speaks to our shared human experience of loss and grief. Such gestures transcend mere depiction; they engage viewers on a visceral level, stirring subconscious associations and connecting us to the past. This image reminds us that symbols are never static; they evolve, resurface, and take on new meanings as they journey through time.
