Carel Adolph Lion Cachet created this sheet of caricatured heads, but the date remains unknown. Cachet lived through the height of colonialism and two world wars. The cartoonish nature of the figures allows for a playful yet critical exploration of human types. Each face, with its exaggerated features, seems to hint at the complex intersections of class, race, and gender that shape identity. The use of caricature invites us to question how society's norms and prejudices are imprinted on the body. Cachet’s caricatures do not shy away from depicting a range of human emotions and experiences. The figures, each rendered with distinctive features, beckon us to consider the individual stories and social contexts embedded in these simple, yet powerful sketches.
