Otto Mueller made this chalk and charcoal drawing of a nude woman in a tree at some point in his career. What strikes me is how simple it all is, like it happened quickly, but with a knowing hand. I can imagine Mueller stepping back, squinting, then adding a few more lines to define the space around her. The marks feel intuitive. And the pale yellow of her skin glows against the dark charcoal background, making her the focal point of the composition. I love how the charcoal is smudged, giving the whole piece a soft, dreamlike quality, like a memory fading at the edges. It reminds me of other painters like Paula Modersohn-Becker, who were also exploring the human form with such directness and sensitivity, and also the way Klimt was using gold to highlight the sensuality of the skin. It’s like they're all in conversation across time, exchanging ideas about how to capture the essence of a figure. Painting is an ongoing conversation, full of echoes and inspirations.
