Myra Greene made this small photograph, number 82 in a series, with a tintype process. Just imagine the darkroom, the smell of chemicals and then the intense, burning light. I can almost feel the artist's hand moving, carefully manipulating tones to create a visceral experience with a restricted palette. The surface is almost topographical, like cracked earth, or maybe skin. I imagine Greene in the darkroom, coaxing out these elusive details. There’s a real push and pull between the materials and the image that feels very present. The emulsion almost feels like it’s pulling away in the lower corner, becoming something else. It reminds me of other photographers like Adam Fuss, who are also invested in this sense of transformation through process and material experimentation. Ultimately, it's about how Myra Greene has embraced accident and imperfection, turning limitations into powerful forms of expression.
