This Cape (Handira), of unknown date, was made by Oulad el Haj Amazigh using textile. The striking combination of the soft, shaggy texture of the dark indigo pile and the smooth, rhythmic stripes creates a compelling contrast that really grabs you. Up close, you can see how the artist carefully built up the surface, alternating between areas of dense, almost furry pile and sections of neatly aligned stripes. The texture is just begging to be touched. I love the way the colors pop against the dark indigo background, especially the warm yellows and reds. They add a lively energy to the piece. And how the tassels create a playful sense of movement and rhythm, drawing the eye across the surface. Thinking about other artists who also use textiles in their work, I’m reminded of the work of Sheila Hicks. The use of unconventional materials and the emphasis on process and materiality feel like they’re part of an ongoing conversation about the possibilities of artmaking.
