Lech Jankowski made this painting, Grüner Tisch, with oil on canvas. I love the textural quality in this piece, it's the kind of painting where you can imagine the artist layering on paint, scraping some of it away, and then going back in again. There's an area on the right-hand side of the table where the paint looks particularly thick, almost as if the artist was building up a little mound. It’s got me wondering what kind of tool Lech Jankowski used to create those marks. The surface has got a really interesting quality to it. It's rough and uneven, and I think that adds to the kind of emotional impact of the piece. In some ways, it reminds me of Giorgio Morandi, especially in the colours he uses to create a still life from a very limited range of tones, and the moody, melancholic atmosphere that pervades the scene.
