Carolus-Duran painted this portrait of Philippe Burty using oil on canvas, a medium traditionally associated with fine art. The visible brushstrokes are a testament to the artist's hand, and the rich texture of the paint adds depth to the portrait. The loose handling of the medium almost renders it as fresco. Notice, for example, the modeling of the face, with the beard rendered in short strokes that give a tangible sense of depth. This approach to the material, this willingness to show the marks of labor, acknowledges the time and effort involved in its creation. Duran was known for his direct approach, often painting alla prima, or wet-on-wet. This technique, which requires speed and confidence, imbued his portraits with a sense of immediacy and vitality. This portrait, through its very materiality, challenges the divide between the creative act and the world of labor, inviting us to appreciate the skill and effort of the artist alongside the subject's own accomplishments.
