Pietro Perugino, active during the Italian Renaissance, painted ‘Lord and cherubs.’ The role and representation of the divine was a central aspect of this period. This work offers a glimpse into the complex relationship between religious belief, artistic expression, and social identity. Dominating the scene is the figure of God, whose portrayal here follows traditional representations but is framed within a composition that invites contemplation on the role of divinity in earthly affairs. The cherubs surrounding God are a conventional image, and yet their positioning adds a layer of intimacy to the divine, softening the perceived distance between the celestial and the human. The male figures on either side of God seem to indicate traditional ideas around masculinity and power. They stand in subordinate positions to God, reinforcing a hierarchy that was very present in the religious, social, and political order of the time. Through its emotional and personal resonance, this artwork reflects and reinforces societal issues of faith, power, and identity.
